Been thinking about jumping into my first AR-15 build for a bit. Finally starting to browse some parts. There are some decent deals out there, but it feels like a maze. I'm not sure what's worth it and what's just overpriced junk.

I'm planning a simple rifle build, starting with 5.56. I've heard that's a good route for beginners, but I'm open to changing that if someone has a different suggestion.

What parts should I steer clear of? Are there brands that you had bad experiences with? And what are some of those sneaky extra costs I might not see coming? Or, honestly, should I just bite the bullet and buy a complete rifle instead?

I'd love to hear your advice, even if it's about mistakes you made along the way. Looking for all the help I can get here.

While I have three rifles, most of my builds are pistol length between 7.5 - 12"
I use rifle buffer tubes with rifle stocks on rifles, I don't like using Carbine length and collapsible on rifles length.
Use Carbine length on pistols with SBT-3 braces
I like the BCM lower parts kits
Other Parts, like the safety and bolt catch, whatever my LGS has.
Yankee Hill extended takedown pins
Hogue grips.
I usually buy a complete upper that includes a BCG and charging handle
