I've been considering getting a shotgun for home defense and could use some input from anyone who's been there. I'm caught up between going for a 12-gauge or a 20-gauge. The 12-gauge seems like it packs a punch, but I've heard the 20-gauge is more manageable with less recoil, especially in tight spaces. What do you think?

On the practical side, what's ideal when it comes to barrel length and stock setup? I'm looking for something that feels intuitive and easy to use. Any specific models or brands that have worked for you? Reliability is key for me.

Also, how crucial is training? I've fired shotguns here and there, but haven't really trained seriously. What kind of practice routines have you found helpful for being prepared in a home defense scenario?

20 gauge doesn't necessarily have less recoil.
They make lower recoil shells for 12 gauge.

I have a 20" Remington 870 that's my HD gun. Do have a light attached.

Have a 19" Beretta 1201fp but it's a thumper and doesn't run as reliability with lower recoil shells

Benelli M2 12 ga. 18 1/2" barrel for me. Expensive? Yes. Quality? Definitely. Short barrel allows me to navigate the narrow hallway in my home. I can load 5+1+1= 7 rds. which includes a ghost rd.
