I’m planning a trip to visit family and need some advice on traveling with my firearm. I’d like to bring it along, but going through New York State seems like a real hassle. Avoiding NY would add a ridiculous amount of drive time, and I’m not sure if it's worth the extra miles. Has anyone else run into this issue and what did you end up doing? I’d love to hear any tips or suggestions on the best routes to take or how to navigate those tricky laws.

NY is a pain for guns yeah. Under FOPA you can drive through if the gun is unloaded locked in the trunk or a hard case out of reach and ammo separate. I take I-80 through Pennsylvania adds about 3 hours but no stops in NY. Keep a printout of the law in your glove box just in case.

Yeah, NY laws are tricky, taking I-80 through PA sounds way less stressful than risking a stop in NY

If you have to pass through New York, keep the gun unloaded, locked in a hard case in the trunk, ammo stored separately, and don’t make unnecessary stops... that’ll keep you in line with both federal safe passage rules and NY’s strict storage laws. It's a pain in the butt, unlike other states, but it'll keep you safe.
