For long-range shooting, a spotting is very necessary. And for most hunting within 300 yards, it is nice-to-have at best. I use mine for verifying hits at distance and glassing terrain while hunting out. But 90% of hunters could skip it and be fine, you can always match your gear to your actual activities
 
I have one and mainly use it to see where my shots land and for looking at things from far away when I'm sitting for a long time. But for most hunts inside of 300 yards, binoculars are good enough and the spotting scope stays in the truck.
