I heard what sounded like a woman screaming in the woods once. Freaked me out until I learned it was a fox. But in the moment that was terrifying. What sounds or experiences in the woods have you had that you couldn't explain right away?

Foxes, bobcats, even owls can sound straight-up demonic at night. I’ve heard footsteps pacing my camp that turned out to be a curious raccoon but my brain went full horror movie.

Many many years ago a friend and I were up camping outside of Williams, AZ. Two evenings in a row, as the sun was going down we experienced noises that sounded like a large flying bug zooming slightly overhead from one side of camp to the other. Always from the one side to the other. This would happen several times then stop as the sun went down. No bug of any sort were seen at those times that would account for that noise. We nicknamed the weird experience "twilight phase bugs" and it was a big laugh for our other friends for years (decades to be honest as it would come up now and then at get togethers). Never experienced it afterwards when camping in that area after that.

Well...

Decades later out shooting suppressed 22LR subs with a camera setup to capture shots down range I heard that exact noise again. The sound of suppressed 22LR subs sound (down range from the firing position) exactly like the noise of the 'twilight phase bugs'. Not kinda', exactly. If you've ever experience it you know the sound. It is very distinct.

Of course, I have no proof, but it's possible that some shitters were having fun at our expense, shooting suppressed 22LR subs (or similar) over our camp. I guess we'll never know.
